What to Look for when You are Hiring a Hair & Makeup Artist
So you have a wedding or other special event coming up and you want to hire someone to do hair & makeup. It is not something you hire every day, so you are not too sure what to look for?
You will find stylists and artists at all ranges of rates and experience. It can become a bit overwhelming with everything else to find the right fit.
Here are some tips to find good & reputable artists:
Check Reviews!
Do NOT hire anyone based on their Social Media Alone.
here is a lot of Smoke and Mirrors with social media. Lots of work is filtered. This does not show their work. Oftentimes the work is not the artist’s work.
If the vendor does not have a big social media presence, it doesn’t mean they are not good. They may just be too busy to devote more time to their social media.
Just because they have a big following and a lot of content, doesn’t mean they are amazing either. Having great social media does not mean you are a busy professional.
Social Media is another way to cross reference vendors with other sources.
A true professional should have a website, not just social media.
You found an artist or team you like now what?
You can set up a trial with the artist if possible.
When you talk with the artist, it is vital that you are 100% honest and transparent about what you like and what you don’t. The outcome of the beauty process is a team effort.
COMMUNICATION IS KEY! It is the only way to get the results you want. You are not hurting anyone’s feelings by wanting to change something.
Without communicating you will most likely leave not 100% happy and then spend more time and money trying to find another artist and have more trials.
Have a variety of photos to show your artist. Tell them what you like and what you don’t about each picture. Pictures are key as what someone describes, is not always how the artist will perceive it.
You Want to Book the Artist, Now What?
YOU NEED TO SIGN A CONTRACT.
You need to read through the contract. Sign the contract. Leave a retainer. Without this, the vendor is not contracted or obligated to be there on your day.
There is nothing like “I don’t have a contract” to show someone is not a professional.
We get contacted weekly from brides frantic because their stylist cancelled right before the event and there was no contract.
Even if it is a friend that you are using. Have a contract!
Watch out for the too good to be true rate. If it is a lot cheaper than other quotes you are getting… it’s probably not a reputable company or artist.
What is the difference between a professional and someone that does it for a hobby?
You do get what you pay for to a certain extent. The cost of hiring an experienced professional can ultimately save you time and money in the end. Not to mention let you enjoy your day without the stress. Also love the way you look & feel.
There is much more to being an event hair & makeup artist than hair & makeup. It’s the prep with lot’s of emails and communication prior. It’s staffing your date with the right artists to service the clients. It’s knowing how long it will take to complete all the services and ensure everyone is done on time and happy.
If hair & makeup runs late, it makes EVERYTHING run late.
A professional will have the right products and tools to ensure your hair & makeup will last as long as possible for a really long day.
A professional is used to not knowing who is in their chair. This means that have to be able to accommodate any ethnicity with skin & hair color and/ or texture.
A professional has the experience to handle unforeseen circumstances that may occur on the day to help ensure things run smoothly and put the client at ease.
By hiring an experienced team/ artist you can rest assured that you will not be without an artist on your day. Unforeseen circumstances that make it so the artist can’t make it to the event can happen.
A professional will ensure that no matter what you will be taken care of and won’t be left stressing trying to find a replacement.
A professional will be fully trained and practicing sanitation. An artist that does not use clean brushes, sponges and other supplies leaves the risk of the client getting infected.
If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask you artist. They want you to be at ease and enjoy your day as well as the planning experience.
This is a huge day! Quite possibly your biggest day ever!
You are spending a lot of money….
You need to get what you want…
You need to love the way you look and feel…
Be able to sit back and let it all play out.
Nothing else matters beside you having the day of your dreams. Having the right vendors can help make your dream a reality.
